Malbecs Only

The Wine ConneXtion Pays Homage to Malbec

Once thought of as the unpopular, secondary grape, Malbec has risen from its humble beginnings and shed its reputation as the outcast to become a celebrated varietal revered by many wine enthusiasts. OnSaturday, January 16th, 2016 from 1:00PM to 5:00PM The Wine ConneXtion, located in North Andover, MA, will commemorate the rise to victory of this thin-skinned yet robust grape with its “Malbecs Only” tasting.

Malbec is one of the six grapes allowed in the blend of red Bordeaux wine. While it was originally planted in great quantities throughout major regions of Bordeaux, factors like sensitivity to frost and other vine ailments resulted in Malbec losing ground to other heartier grapes like Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Malbec was given a second chance, however, when French agronomist Miguel Pouget brought the grapevine cuttings from France to Argentina. After its success in Argentina, the grape regained traction as a worthy red wine contender.
