Massachusetts Enters 6th Week of Double Digit Declines in Gas Prices

Despite some claims that the end of falling gas prices is in sight, the average price of gas in Massachusetts dropped another 10 cents since last week.

This makes the state’s sixth consecutive week of a double digit price decline, and puts Massachusetts’s average gas price at $2.15.

Prices at the pump have dropped 42 cents in the past month, according to AAA Northeast. The price of oil, and therefore gas, has been plummeting every week since late July 2014. Massachusetts’s current average is $1.25 lower than it was a year ago, when gas in the state cost an average of $3.40.

Even with prices lower than they’ve been in five years, consumers prefer the cheapest gas. And with a 74-cent price range across Massachusetts, from a low of $1.95 to a high of $2.69, finding the best price could mean a big chunk of change in your wallet. AAA’s gas finder feature allows drivers to shop around for the best price in their area before even hitting the road.

But despite all the extra money low gas prices have put into consumers’ wallets, not everyone is convinced the plummet in oil prices is a good thing. Some people have argued the price drop is just a sign of coming recession and will make prices even higher once global demand returns.
