A man took his own life after barricading himself in a home Wednesday night and firing at police.

NORTH ANDOVER, MA — A man barricaded himself in a North Andover home Wednesday night, leading to an hours-long stand-off. One officer was injured by gunfire before the man took his own life, police said.

A family member of the 36-year-old man had called 911 to report he was suffering from a mental health episode.

Police arrived at a Waverley Road home shortly before 10 p.m.

A police officer was injured when the man fired a round that struck the officer's cruiser, resulting in metal shards hitting the officer's head, according to police.

The officer was treated and released from the hospital.

The suspect ignored police orders to leave the home and continued to shoot from the home's front and rear windows, police said.

He was found dead several hours later due to an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Police did not release the man's identity.

Police said there is no threat to the public.
