North Andover Woman Charged With Motor Vehicle Homicide In Crash: DA

A woman is accused of crashing into a building while drunk, leading to the death of another woman, prosecutors said.

NORTH ANDOVER, MA — A North Andover woman is facing a litany of charges following a crash into a building that led to another woman's death Sunday night, according to a statement from Essex County District Attorney Paul Tucker.

Police responded to the call around 11 p.m. Sunday. A vehicle had crashed into Daeva Hair Salon on Main Street in North Andover, according to Boston 25 News.

Diana Melo, age 37, of Lawrence was pronounced dead after being transported to Lawrence General Hospital. It's unclear if Melo was in a vehicle or inside the building when the crash occurred.

Vickiana Vargas-Guevara, age 28, of North Andover, was charged with motor vehicle homicide while under the influence of alcohol and being negligent, motor vehicle homicide by reckless operation, leaving the scene of a collision resulting in death, leaving the scene of property damage, operating under the influence of liquor, and reckless operation, according to Tucker's statement.

She was arraigned in Lawrence District Court on Monday. Tucker requested bail be set at $250,000 with terms of GPS monitoring with house arrest, no alcohol, no driving, and a substance abuse evaluation with aftercare.

A judge set bail at $50,000 and approved the prosecutor's requested terms other than GPS monitoring with house arrest.

Vargas-Guevara is due back in court July 17.

An investigation into the accident is ongoing.
