Obituary: Robert Walter Carter, Machinist

Served in the U.S. Navy during WWII aboard the Patrol Craft 1183 as a motor machinist's Mate First Class

Robert Walter Carter, 89, formerly of Andover, MA passed away on October 26, 2014 at The Prescott House in North Andover, Ma. He was born in Beverly, MA to Lucy Ann (Hathaway) and Enos Walter Carter. He was the husband of the late Delores M (Bertsch), they were married for 47 years.
Mr. Carter was raised in North Andover, MA and lived most of his life in Andover, MA. The last years of his life he lived at Ashland Farms Assisted Living in North Andover. Mr. Carter was a graduate of Johnson High School in North Andover. During High School he worked as a caddy and groundskeeper at the North Andover Country Club. He served in the US Navy during the Second World War aboard the Patrol Craft 1183 as a Motor Machinist’s Mate First Class. He then served in the US Naval Reserves until 1955. He worked his entire career at Tyer Rubber Company (later Converse Rubber and Kern Rubber) in Andover as a machinist. He loved gardening and was an avid vegetable gardener who shared his bounty with everyone. He was proud of the fact that most of his garden he started from seed. He also enjoyed spending time at his camp on Deering Lake in New Hampshire with family and friends. He loved to travel and was very proud of the fact that he traveled over 1,000,000 miles by car on vacation during his lifetime.
Bob is survived by his son Robert L. and his wife Lilian Carter of Windham, NH and his daughter Jean M. and her husband Jim Jensen of Troutdale, OR; a brother, William and his wife Betsy Fosburgh Carter of Laconia, NH. He is also survived by his longtime companion Rita Carrier of Andover. He leaves three grandchildren Jamie Jensen, Denise Landry and Laurie Lewis and five great grandchildren: Cameron, Katelyn and Madison Lewis, Logan and Amaya Jensen.
Family and friends are invited to calling hours on Wednesday, October 29, 2014 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Conte Funeral Home, 28 Florence Street, Andover, Ma. A celebration of life will be held at the funeral home, on Thursday, October 30, 2014 at 10 a.m.. Burial will follow at the Spring Grove Cemetery in Andover.
