Phil DeCologero, A Leader We Can Trust

Phil DeCologero, A Leader We Can Trust

There inevitably comes a time in the term of a politician when she finds herself involved in an issue that splits the voters with passionate opinions on both sides. The North Andover Meals Tax was one such issue for me. I worked hard to secure this funding for our town, while many others argued it created hardships for certain residents and our local restaurants. Phil DeCologero and I had been friends for some time and we spoke at length about the tax; as a founder of the North Andover Merchants Association, and as a strong defender of our small businesses, he felt the tax would have a negative impact and as such was opposed to the increase.

Despite Phil’s opposition, and unlike many of those who shared his view, he consistently stuck to a reasonable stance, never made it personal, and he never blamed me for supporting something that I felt was important. His was the most relevant and reasoned voice on an issue that clearly divided that year’s two Town Meetings. He respected his opponents, he didn’t invent “facts” and I knew what he told me yesterday wouldn’t flip flop in the next news cycle. I trusted Phil then to tell me the truth, just as I trust him now.

When Phil approached me about running for State Representative I was thrilled he was making such an important commitment. He has been a dedicated community leader since he graduated High School. He has shown his commitment to the Merrimack Valley as an aide at the State House, by his good works in North Andover, in his service at Methuen City Hall, and in his staunch and unflinching support of another “new kid” on the block – Mayor Dan Rivera of Lawrence. We need leaders like these who will follow through on their word, and who will work together to improve all of the Merrimack Valley. We need leaders we can trust. Please join me in voting for Phil DeCologero, our next 14th Essex Representative, on primary day September 9, 2014.

Thank you,

Chris Allen
