Francis P. MacMillan Jr., M.D. is re-elected to officer post of state medical society

North Andover resident, member of Board of Health is re-elected Vice-Speaker of the House of Delegates of Massachusetts Medical Society

Waltham, Mass. – May 5 - Francis P. MacMillan Jr., M.D. has been re-elected Vice Speaker of the House of Delegates of the Massachusetts Medical Society at the organization’s annual meeting on May 5 at the Seaport Hotel in Boston. As Vice-Speaker, he will assist in managing the business of the Society’s House of Delegates, the legislative and policy-making body of the organization comprised of more than 500 physician members.

Dr. MacMillan is the owner and president of Merrimack Valley Gastroenterology, a private medical practice in Haverhill that he founded in 2004. Board-certified in gastroenterology, he has appointments at Holy Family Hospital, Anna Jaques Hospital, and Lawrence General Hospital. At Holy Family Hospital, he has been a member of the Executive Committee since 2006 and has served as the former Merrimack Valley Hospital Chief of the Department of Medicine and Medical Staff President. He is also a Clinical Instructor of Socio-Medical Sciences and Community Health at Boston University School of Medicine, a position he was appointed to in 2010.

A member of the Massachusetts Medical Society since 1991, Dr. MacMillan has been a member of the Society’s House of Delegates since 2005. He is currently a member of the Committee on Legislation, Secretary of the Essex North District Medical Society, and is an Alternate Delegate from Massachusetts to the American Medical Association House of Delegates. He has previously served as a member of the Society’s Task Forces on Health Care Reform and House of Delegates Procedures and was president of the district society from 2007-2009.

Dr. MacMillan has also taken leadership roles in the state and national societies of his specialty of gastroenterology. He was elected a Fellow of the American College of Gastroenterology in 2010 and was appointed a member of its National Affairs Committee for 2014-2017. He served as ACG Governor for Massachusetts from 2011-2014 and was re-elected to that position for the 2014-2017 term. On the state level, he is a founding member of the Massachusetts Gastroenterology Association, which was established in 2011, served as its Vice President from 2011-2014, and currently serves as its President.

A graduate of Boston College with a B.A. in economics and an M.S. in biology, Dr. MacMillan earned his M.D. from the Boston University School of Medicine. He completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Boston and a Fellowship in gastroenterology at Lahey Clinic.

Dr. MacMillan is also a member of the Board of Health in North Andover, where he resides, and writes a monthly column on health for the Valley Patriot newspaper which circulates in northeast Massachusetts and southern New Hampshire.
