Saint Michael School Takes First Place At The Jowdy World Knowledge Challenge
St. Michael School of N. Andover has third consecutive first place win at the Lawrence Public Library's 27th Jowdy World Knowledge Challenge

Saint Michael School is proud to announce their third consecutive first place win at the Lawrence Public Library’s 27th Jowdy World Knowledge Challenge held on June 1, 2017. The Jowdy World Knowledge Challenge, an event that challenges middle school students on their knowledge of geography, has taken place annually since 1990. This year 7 schools within the Merrimack Valley came together to compete for the 2017 title.
The Saint Michael School Jowdy team included 5 members from grades 5-8. Team members were A. Imbornone, E. Wlodyka, MK Turk, P. Green, and J. Materson. The students were selected by taking a qualifying exam. In preparing for the challenge the students met regularly with their advisor, Cathryn Rich (In-House Substitute), and studied various categories of geography. The categories for the competition this year were: Capital Cities of Africa, U. S. State Symbols, Lawrence Immigrant City Sites, and Flags of Central America, South America, and the Caribbean.
The contest was established by the late Edward Jowdy, a Lawrence native. His widow, Theresa Jowdy of Glendale, California continues to support the event in memory of her husband. The Jowdy World Knowledge Challenge is a tradition in the community, encouraging children and schools to discover exciting new ways to learn the geography of home and abroad.
