"Summer at the Stevens" - Libraries Rock! 7/9 to 8/17

Summer Programming Schedule at the Stevens Memorial Library in North Andover, MA

Are you ready for a summer of great programing and opportunities to read great books? Then take a look at what we have planned below for adults, teens & children and mark your calendar so you don’t miss a thing! All “Summer at the Stevens” programs are free and all are welcome to attend!

Reading is fun for all ages, pick out titles that peek your curiosity or choose books from our suggested reading lists. Read a newspaper, magazine, or graphic novel. With the advancement of technology, the format of a book can vary greatly, choose from books on CD, Large print books, e-Books or audio books from Overdrive to download to your tablet or phone, or maybe you just like that hardcover book. Don’t forget about movies, music and museum passes!

Children’s Programs on Wednesdays, at 7pm
Every Wednesday during “Summer at the Stevens”, special children’s programs are planned. No registration required, unless specifically stated.

  • July 11 – Todd Brodeur, Frisbee Tricks – Ages 3 yrs+
    Are you interested in Frisbees? Do you want to learn some fancy new Frisbee tricks? Come watch Todd Brodeur to learn about Frisbees…and learn a trick or two of your own!
  • July 18 – Wildkat Hoops, Hula Hooping – Ages 4 yrs+
    Are you interested in Hula Hooping? Do you want to learn some new hooping tricks? Come watch Kat Suwalski perform hooping magic… and maybe pick up a few tricks of your own!
  • July 25 – Pretty as a Princess, Stories and Songs – All Ages
    Meet Rapunzel, Cinderella and Princess Beauty as they tell their stories and sign their songs!
  • August 1 – Wildlife Encounters, Live Animals – Ages 3 yrs+
    Derek Small and his team of wildlife experts will bring live animals into the library, including a coatimundi and an alligator snapping turtle. Plus you can see the difference between a porcupine and a hedgehog!
  • August 8 – Science Tellers, Science and Stories – Ages 4 yrs+
    Wild West: The Mystery of the Golden Piano. Throughout this absolutely wild adventure story, volunteers from the audience will help us explore the fascinating science behind chemical reactions, acids and bases, combustion, air pressure, inertia and more.
  • August 15 – Bryson Lang, Comedic Juggling – All Ages
    Bryson has everything in his show: flying sombreros, sharp sickles, huge spinning rings, upside down bounce-juggling, giant beach balls, glow-in-the-dark objects, a tennis racquet and always a few surprises.

Family Movies under the Tent (at Stevens Estate) – Mondays at 7:00 pm

Join us every week to watch a family-friendly film, outside, at the beautiful Stevens Estate. Some seating is provided. Weekly Children’s Programs

  • Monday
    10:30am - Oh Baby Lapsit – (0-18 months) This popular infant program provides early literacy opportunities for caregivers and babies through a story time with interactive song, movement, and fingerplay.
  • Tuesday
    1-2pm - STEM Playtime – (4yrs+) Come and learn about the gross and slimy; things that explode, and lots of other awesome science!
  • Wednesday
    10:30am - Wiggleworms Toddlertime – (18-36 months) Storytime for toddlers will include songs, stories, felt boards, and other visual methods of storytelling.
  • Thursday
    3:30pm-4:30pm - Come Play Outside – (Grades K-5) Do you like playing outside? Join us for fun with bubbles, beach balls, and other outdoor adventures!
  • Friday
    10:30am - On Our Own Time – (3 yrs+) Storytime for preschool age will include songs, stories, felt boards, and other visual methods of storytelling.
    1:30pm-3:30pm – ART Lab – (3 yrs+) Drop in and build with us! Follow the steps to create a project, or make up your own for a one of a kind art piece!

Teen Programs

  • Bytes of Code – Weekly on Tuesdays, 6:30pm-7:30pm & Thursdays, 3pm-4pm – Open to ages 11-18
    Learn about coding and animation, digital art, digital music, and more in these hour-long coding sessions! Animation with Scratch – Learn the basics of Java, Phython, and HTML. Registration not required, we have 20 Chromebooks or bring your own laptop.
  • Monday Afternoon Teen Movies –Weekly on Mondays @ 2:30pm
    For more detail on the specific movies, pick up a movie schedule at the library, check the library website calendar, follow us on Facebook or twitter. On a hot summer day, bring some friends and enjoy a good movie in the air conditioned comfort of the Library.
  • High School Book Discussion Group – Tuesday July 10th and Tuesday August 7th, 4-5pm
    Join the NAHS Librarian and the Stevens Teen Librarian in a book discussion. Pick up the book at the Reference or Teen Desk.
  • Songwriting Workshop with Hungrytown – Thursday, July 19th
    The singer / songwriter duo, Hungrytown, will be here to help you learn how to keep inspiration moving from start to finish in this songwriting workshop.

Thursday Evenings Series, for Adults, at 7pm

  • July 12 – Horticulturist Gail Anderson: “Pleasure Grounds”
    Learn about current horticultural practices, special plants, and landscape restoration efforts with Gail Anderson.
  • July 19 - Hungrytown: “Songwriting Workshop”
    In this workshop learn techniques for keeping your creative momentum from the first inspiration to the final edits.
  • July 26 –Lance Hiddy: “Ansel Adams, Environmentalist and Photographer”
    Hidy’s writing on design history has been widely published. For 18 years, he served as a professor of Art and Design at Northern Essex Community College in Haverhill.
  • August 2 – Sam Ducharme: “Thru Hiking the Appalachian Trail”
    Sam Ducharme shares images and stories of trail towns, mountaintops and wildlife from Georgia to Maine.
  • August 9 – Author, Kate Clifford Larson: “Rosemary: The Hidden Kennedy Daughter”
    Rosemary Kennedy was beautiful, attended exclusive schools, but her family hid the secret of her intellectual disability.
  • August 16 – Will Broussard: “Tales from the Home of the World’s Worst Weather”
    Will Broussard shares remarkably true stories from Mt. Washington.

Local Authors Fair - Tuesday, July 31st 4-8pm

New this year, the Stevens Memorial Library is holding its first Local Authors Fair at the Stevens Estate at Osgood Hill. Meet local authors! If you are a local author interested in the Fair, contact the Library for details.

  • Poetry Open Mic – July 24th and August 28th at 6:30pm

The Stevens’ Library of Things is growing: our newest additions are a guitar, ukulele, and banjo. The Stevens’ Library of Things will continue to expand, keep an eye out, there might be a telescope on the horizon.
