Whenever my wife and I travel in the United States, I always try to research the various options available to get us from the destination airport to our hotel.
I prefer to rent a car, but if we arrive on a weekday, the daily rates are expensive. And, if we want to drop the car at the rental car counter near our hotel, the drop off charges can be almost as much as the base rental charge itself.
Limos can be pricey, and public transportation never seems to be fast enough or have stops within walking distance of our hotel.
One option is taking a taxi. And a website exists that will calculate the fare in many metropolitan areas of the U.S. It's called www.taxifarefinder.com.
You type in the destination airport and the address of the hotel you'll be staying at, and it will calculate the trip's cost. And there's a handy scale at the edge of the site to show the range of fares you'll encounter in the event of heavy traffic delays. It even shows the route the cab will take to get you to your destination.
