Northborough Schools To Get Part Of Nearly $25M In Funding To Improve Literacy Instruction

NORTHBOROUGH, MA — Northborough schools will continue participating in a statewide effort to strengthen reading instruction for younger students.

Northborough Public Schools, in partnership with Southborough Public Schools, was among the districts included in nearly $25 million in literacy awards announced by Gov. Maura Healey. The funding will support evidence-based literacy instruction, educator training and services for students.

"Reading is the foundation for everything students do in school and throughout their lives," said Governor Maura Healey. "That's why we're making historic investments to strengthen literacy instruction, support educators and help every student build the skills they need to succeed."

Northborough and Southborough are participating in the Partnership for Reading Success — Massachusetts program, known as PRISM I. The initiative focuses on literacy systems for students in preschool through third grade, according to the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.

Grant funds may be used for professional development, student assessments, instructional materials, high-dosage tutoring and salaries for literacy coaches, reading specialists or interventionists. Districts can also use the money for teacher stipends and substitute costs tied to professional development.

Participating districts will work with a state-approved leadership coach to carry out customized early literacy plans. They must also provide student assessment and other program data to help the state evaluate the initiative.

Northborough and Southborough received a combined $669,818 PRISM I continuation grant during the previous funding round announced in September 2025
