NORTHBOROUGH, MA — Student-athletes from across the Northborough and Southborough school district gathered for a day of competition and inclusion during the fourth annual Titan Games.
More than 100 students from the district's 10 schools participated in the Special Olympics-style track and field event last Friday at Algonquin Regional High School in Northborough. Competitions included long jump, throwing and running events.
The games opened with student-athletes parading around the track with a Titan Games banner and torch. The ceremony also included a performance of the national anthem and a recitation of the Special Olympics athlete oath.
Middle school student volunteers joined physical therapists, occupational therapists and other district support staff in helping athletes rotate through events during the day.
"The Titan Games is one of our favorite events of the year," district adapted physical education teacher Frank Nellenback said. "It is truly a special day of competition, and I am always inspired to see our athletes showing off their skills in the different running, throwing and jumping events."
Nellenback, who helped organize the event, thanked the student volunteers and staff members who supported the athletes.
Each participant received a medal, and the games ended with a closing ceremony, dance party on the track and outdoor picnic.
"We are always proud to watch athletes, staff and student volunteers from across the district join together for the Titan Games," Superintendent Gregory L. Martineau said. "It was inspiring to see participants from all 10 schools gather and uplift each other throughout the day."
