NORTHBOROUGH, MA — The Northborough Police Department has created a new role aimed at strengthening support for domestic violence victims and survivors.
Officer Melissa Lonergan has been named the department's first domestic violence liaison officer after Northborough police received a $10,950 Edward J. Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant, the department announced on Monday. The grant is administered through the Massachusetts Executive Office of Public Safety and Security.
Lonergan will help connect individuals and families with resources while supporting domestic violence awareness and prevention efforts. Police said the role is just an added responsibility for him, not a newly created staff position.
The department announced the appointment during the final week of Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Purple ribbons are also being displayed on Northborough police cruisers in recognition of victims and survivors.
"Domestic violence affects individuals and families in every community," the department said. "We want everyone to know that you are not alone, help is available and your safety matters."
