I remember when I was about six years old, my brother and my sister and I found a bird with a broken wing on the side of the road as we were walking to town. We ran to the little store nearby and asked the manager for a box so that we could carry the bird home for our mother to “fix.” As the manager looked into our saddened eyes, he did not have the heart to say no. He left us for a moment and when he returned he had a box for us.
We ran back to the bird which was standing and as we surrounded him we were able to catch him. We put him in the box, closed the flaps and softly spoke to it as we made our way home. I remember my mother putting him in the barn and telling us that the bird had a broken wing. Still, we had faith that it would fly away after it healed. We gave the bird dog food…that is all we had…and we spent hours watching him to see if there was any evidence that he was healing.

I don’t remember what happened to the bird except that a couple of days later the bird was gone. My mother told us it flew away. We felt so happy to have been able to help this bird that our faces were beaming. Whether this was the truth or not, we won’t ever know.
Bad days can be like broken wings. As the days pass, we keep hoping that we will be able to lift our heads and continue on with life as best as we can. It may take days, or even longer some times, but all we can do at the moment is to remember to take one day at a time.

Like the three children who had faith that the bird would one day fly again, we have to keep the faith that we too will be able to move forward and fly through the rest of our days.

Poems: Broken Wings Can Heal
We all have had a bad day.
Hard times may affect us in some way,
But it doesn’t mean we have to stay down,
We will get what we need to stand again…somehow.
Even when a bird has a broken wing,
He can still sing,
And in time,
His wings will heal…and he again…can fly.
It is the same with us at times,
We might have days where we don’t want to fly.
We might have to forgo the energy it takes to sing,
But once we are feeling better we will be up to continuing in our life’s routine.
So don’t let a bad day spoil the flow,
Take a time out and then you will know,
If your spirit is strengthen you might want to sing,
And like a bird you will spread your wings.
