Community Remembers Death of Mark 'The Bird' Fidrych
The major league pitcher from Northborough is remembered on the anniversary of his death.

As remembered by a post in “We Grew Up in Northgate in Northborough” Facebook page, April 13 marks the sad anniversary of the tragic death of Mark “The Bird” Fidrych.
“Thinking of Fid today on this sad anniversary - continue to rest in peace - we all miss you,” wrote Ellen McNamara Swirsky.

The Northborough native, and major league baseball player, died in an accident involving a tractor on his property in 2009.
His daughter, Jessica, still owns and operates Chet’s Diner in town.

Fidrych was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in 1975 and broke numerous records, earning “rookie of the year” that year. When he retired, he moved back to Northborough to his farm.
The family continues his legacy through the Mark Fidrych Foundation, a charity that produces various fundraisers throughout the year. Its flagship event is the annual softball tournament, happening Aug. 22 this year in Northborough.
