Special Education group announces fall programs

Northborough Southborough Special Education Parent Advisory Group (NSPAC) will be holding free workshops and presentations.

NSPAC has announced it's September and October schedule of free parent workshops and presentations and is also looking for volunteers for its newly updated Understanding Our Differences program.

SEPTEMBER

Monday, Sept. 25: Basic Rights in Special Education - A FREE workshop for parents and professionals. 6 pm - 8 pm. Algonquin Regional High School, 79 Bartlett St., Northborough in the Library. The workshop will provide a basic understanding of the complex special education laws and procedures. Presented by Gayle Dublin, Federation for Children with Special Needs, Parent Training & Information Center.

Tuesday, Sept. 26: When Friends Don't Come Easy. 7 pm. Join co-hosts Shrewsbury SEPAC and Westborough SEPAC for this free workshop presented by Alison Ratner Mayer, LICSW, of Child Therapy Boston. Please RSVP to shrewsbury.sepac@gmail.com by 9/22. Location: Floral Street School Media Center, 57 Floral Street, Shrewsbury.

Tuesday, Oct. 3: 7 pm - 9 pm. Intro to the Transition Planning Process. An overview of the transition planning process for youth with disabilities ages 14-22 on IEPs. Presented by Leslie Leslie of the Federation for Children with Special Needs. RSVP by 9/29 to hopkintonsepac@gmail.com. Location: Hopkinton Middle School, the Lecture Hall, 88 Hayden Rowe Street, Hopkinton. NSPAC is co-sponsor of this event with the Hopkinton SEPAC.

NSPAC is also looking for parent and community volunteers for its Understanding Our Differences Program, which is presented to all fourth graders in Northborough and Southborough later this fall. All volunteers would need to be CORI checked.

The program will help to teach empathy, kindness and understanding of disabilities. In order for this program to be successfully presented to the students, volunteers at each elementary school will be needed. Email nspac1@gmail.com with your interest.

NSPAC membership is open to parents and guardians of children who have Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), 504s or anyone interested in special education within the district. Collaboration with parents and district administration ensures that children with special needs and learning differences in the district receive a safe and appropriate education.
