Students Graduate From Safety Class

North Reading Community Impact Team and the Flint Memorial Library graduated 13 students from Safe Kids Storytime.

The North Reading Community Impact Team, in partnership with the Flint Memorial Library graduated thirteen students age 3-5 from the Safe Kids Storytime class last week. Following the Talk About Touching curriculum created by the national Committee for Children, the course teaches children about all types of safety including fire safety, traffic, getting found when you’re lost and touching safety. The course was offered free to all families thanks to a donation from the CIT. The 6-week course was instructed by the North Reading Youth Services Director Amy Luckiewicz and Youth Librarian Emma Weiler on Mondays. Luckiewicz commented, “It’s very hard for many families to talk about touching safety. We wanted to offer this course to help with that and put it in context of just another safety rule a child should follow. What I like most about the curriculum is that it is age-appropriate and includes lessons on what to do if someone breaks a rule about touching.” At the culmination of the program last week, the children presented a review of all of the safety rules they learned and were awarded graduation certificates from Fire Chief Bill Warnock and School Resource Officer Detective Scott Tilton. The CIT hopes to offer another course in the Spring in partnership with the library. For more information, please contact Amy Luckiewicz at youthservices@northreadingma.gov.
