Austin Prep golfer named league MVP

The Golf Team at Austin Preparatory School just finished the perfect season.

For the first time in the Reading school’s history, the team went undefeated (15-0). In addition, the golfers captured the Catholic Central League Championship.

Moving on to the state tournament, Austin Prep finished second by just two points and qualified for the state finals.

Senior Drew Gerety of Melrose and sophomore Nick Hampoian of North Reading were named the CCL’s Most Valuable Players.

In individual play, Hampoian won the CCL championship individual tournament, with Gerety taking second place. In state tournament play, Drew won the regional individual tournament, with Nick placing third.

In related news, Gerety has been selected as the inaugural recipient of the Jim Beane Sportsmanship Award by the PGA New England Junior Golf Committee & Tour.

He will receive his honor during an awards ceremony on Sunday, November 1 at Marlborough Country Club.
