It’s been hard to turn on the radio in the Merrimack Valley this past week without hearing an ad about the situation at CLASS, Inc. You may be wondering what’s going on at CLASS and why human service workers there are speaking out. Well, here’s what’s up:
CLASS, Inc. provides services to hundreds of individuals with disabilities throughout the Merrimack Valley, such as day habilitative care, family resources and advocacy, job placement and clinical case management. Yet, despite the vital role they play in the community, many human service workers at CLASS earn close to minimum wage. And to make matters worse, management has largely ignored workers’ concerns over health and safety issues in CLASS facilities and vehicles. These conditions prompted CLASS workers to seek a greater voice in the workplace through the Human Service Workers Union, SEIU Local 509, and their union election is taking place this week at locations in Lawrence, North Andover and North Reading.
That’s why human service workers at CLASS are taking to the airwaves with a final push toward Wednesday’s vote. As you’ve undoubtedly heard, the ‘Human Service Workers Vote UNION YES!’ ad campaign has already reached thousands of English and Spanish-speaking listeners of radio stations throughout the region – along with print advertisements in local newspapers. The aggressive regional ad blitz caps off service providers’ months-long effort to secure better pay, safer working conditions and a greater voice in the workplace at CLASS.
