Child Safety Class Offered at Library

The North Reading Community Impact Team, Flint Memorial Library and Youth Services are teaming up to offer free child safety course.

The North Reading Community Impact Team and Flint Memorial Library are teaming up to offer Safe Kids Story Time on Tuesdays in the library’s activity room. Children ages 4-6 are encouraged to sign up at the library for the 5-week course beginning Tuesday, May 10th at 3:15pm. The 45-minute classes are based on Second Step: Child Protection Unit designed by the Committee for Children. Lessons teach children social skills that are intended to help avoid and discourage dangerous or abusive situations. Thematic lessons include car, fire and gun safety, getting found when you are lost, and learning the difference between safe, unsafe and unwanted touches. During the story time, children will sit with Youth Librarian Danielle Masterson and Youth Services Director Amy Luckiewicz for a story or two and an additional activity based on the day’s lesson. “This will be the third time we’ve offered this course. I love it because it’s a safety course for young children and includes touching safety,” commented Youth Services Director Amy Luckiewicz. “I’ve been teaching this program for about 6 years and it’s a great opportunity for us to make touching rules just as second-nature as we do seat belts.” Supports for parents will be available for checkout at the library and address how to continue the safety conversation at home. In addition, each parent will receive a letter stating what the week’s focus will be and what the children learned. The program is offered free to the community thanks to a partnership between the Flint Memorial Library, North Reading Youth Services, and the North Reading Community Impact Team.

To register, visit www.flintmemoriallibrary.org, contact Danielle Masterson at dmasterson@northreadingma.gov, or visit the Flint Memorial Library 4th floor to register.
