EarlyAct Completes Flag Box Project

Service club for grades 3-5 sees a need and fixes it.

The North Reading Community EarlyAct Club completed its latest service project to benefit the North Reading community. Youth Services Director Amy Luckiewicz explained, “The students meet in the same room that Veteran’s Services uses in Town Hall. The students noticed that there wasn’t a great space to store old American flags that people turn in to have them properly disposed of. They wanted to do something about it.” Beginning in December, the students began assembling a 18” square box. Each student took turns with the drill, painting, and planning of the collection box. It was decided early on that this would be a surprise gift to Veteran’s Services Agent Sue Magner, who regularly speaks to the group about serving her country. By working together, the students completed the box over the course of two meetings. At completion, the group left the collection box at Magner’s office door of Veteran’s Services agent Susan Magner as a surprise with a note saying, “Thank you for all you do for us.”

Community members are encouraged to bring their used flags to Town Hall, Room 10 and drop their flags in the new collection box for proper disposal.

About the North Reading Community EarlyAct Club
The club is designed for students grades 3-5, representing all schools in North Reading. Based on a Rotary International model, the projects and meetings focus on the values of gratitude, community, leadership, commitment, and inclusion. The club meets twice per month to plan and implement a local or international humanitarian project. Initiated just this past March, the group was formed by 4 parent volunteers: Sandy Garniss, Samantha Miller, Karen Buscemi, and Leslie Schultz in partnership with North Reading Rotary Club’s Peter Majane and Director of Youth Services Amy Luckiewicz. For more information on how to register a student in the North Reading Community EarlyAct Club or its sister club at North Reading Middle School, email youthservices@northreadingma.gov or call Amy at 978.357.5281.
