Hydrant Flushing Begins on Monday

The North Reading Water Department will be conducting the annual fire hydrant flushing program starting on Monday, Sept. 15.

The hydrant flushing removes “any fine iron or manganese sediment from the water mains in the streets. Iron and manganese are naturally occurring minerals found in the soils near the town’s water supply wells,” according to the Department of Public Works.

They don’t pose health risks, but can cause discolored water and staining of plumbing fixtures and laundry.

Flushing will take place until October on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays usually between the hours of 8 a.m. and 3 p.m.

“Residents and business owners are cautioned that they may experience discolored water during the hours of flushing in their area,” according to the DPW.
