Jones, Tarr Secure Funding For North Reading Initiatives

FY22 budget provides $90K for computer replacements, traffic study

House Minority Leader Bradley H. Jones, Jr. (R-North Reading) and Senate Minority Leader Bruce Tarr (R-Gloucester) have secured $90,000 in funding for two North Reading initiatives as part of the state budget process.

The funding was included in the $48.1 billion Fiscal Year 2022 state budget that was enacted by the House and Senate on July 9 and is now before Governor Charlie Baker for his review. The budget represents a compromise spending plan that reconciles the differences between earlier versions of the budget approved by the House in April and the Senate in May.

The budget includes a $40,000 earmark to assist North Reading with computer upgrades in its public schools. This funding will allow for the replacement of older computers and other electronic devices used by students and faculty.

The budget also contains $50,000 to help fund an intersection study and analysis designed to improve public safety on North Reading’s roadways. Town officials have been working to identify local intersections that are at high risk for motor vehicle crashes and to determine what measures can be taken to improve public safety at these intersections. This earmark will supplement a prior $50,000 earmark that was included in the Fiscal Year 2021 budget that was signed in December.

“The FY22 budget will provide updated computer equipment for North Reading’s public schools, while also helping to further the town’s efforts to make its roads safer for everyone,” said Representative Jones. “I'm pleased that Senator Tarr and I were able to work together on the town’s behalf to ensure that these items were retained in the final budget.”

“Strengthening education and improving roadway safety are two important priorities that can benefit from partnership between North Reading and the state,” said Senator Tarr. “I am glad to be able to work with Representative Jones to include these priorities in the budget.”

Governor Baker has until July 19 to review the budget and issue any vetoes.
