Michael McDonald Passes Away

Longtime owner of the McDonald Machine Tool Service of North Reading

Michael J. McDonald, 69, of North Reading and formerly of Boston and Andover, died Thursday evening, June 8, at Winchester Hospital after a long illness.

Born in Boston on June 30, 1947, he was the son of the late James and Mary M. (Fisher) McDonald. He attended North Reading High School, Andover High School, Charlestown High School and was a graduate Northeast Regional Vocational School.

Michael was the longtime owner of the McDonald Machine Tool Service of North Reading. He rebuilt and repaired manufacturing equipment in companies throughout New England. His amazing problem solving skills gave him a solid reputation throughout the industry.

He was an early member of the North Reading Minute & Militia, Gloucester Power Squadron, Corinthian Yacht Club, where he was Fleet Captain from1995 to 1998 and In honor of his contributions he was given an honorary lifetime membership in 2008.

Michael had once been described as the toughest man, with a very tender heart. He had a cheerful, kind demeanor and was the first to come to assistance of anyone in distress. His numerous good deeds were done quietly without boast. In his sailing circle he was known as “no problem” Mike, for his ability to solve mechanical boating issues for others. He had a wicked sense of humor and a loyal devotion to family and friends.

The love of the ocean drew him to his lifelong passion of sailing on his sailboat “Stephanotis” moored in Marblehead. He sailed the New England coast, with his wife and best friend, as First mate for over thirty years. He crewed on friends boats for adventures in the Caribbean, Bahamas, Bermuda and Florida, etc. He was a certified Scuba diver and just prior to his debilitating stroke in 2007, he was learning how to fly.

Family members include his loving wife of 49 years, Stephanie G. (Short) McDonald; sons, Devin S. McDonald, Trevor M. McDonald and Keith M. McDonald; sisters, Debra Companion, Claire McCoy and the late Catherine McDonald; 6 grandchildren, Ryan, Nicholas, Mitchell, Jill, Chloe and Kylie.
Calling hours will be held at the Croswell Funeral Home, 19 Bow Street, North Reading on Friday, June 30, from 4 to 7 pm There will be no service.
