North Reading’s Julia Smith Interns with Rep. Jones for the Summer
Quinnipiac University student learns about legislative process while assisting with policy research and constituent services

House Minority Leader Bradley H. Jones, Jr. (R-North Reading) recently hosted North Reading resident Julia Smith as an intern in his State House office.
A fourth-year undergraduate student at Quinnipiac University, Smith worked alongside Representative Jones and his staff on Beacon Hill this summer, where she learned about the legislative process and assisted with policy research and constituent services. Her grandfather, William Smith, previously served with Representative Jones as a member of the North Reading Board of Selectmen (now Select Board) during the 1990s.
“As a legislator, I’ve been fortunate to have many talented local students intern for me over the years, and Julia was no exception,” said Representative Jones. “Julia is bright and energetic, and she came to work motivated and eager to learn. She was very helpful in assisting me and my staff on a number of issues impacting the residents of the Twentieth Middlesex District.”

As an intern, Smith participated in the Joint Legislative Summer Intern Speaker Series Program, which is overseen by the House Committee on Human Resources and Employee Engagement and the Senate Office of Education and Civic Engagement. The speaker series offers interns an opportunity to attend informative presentations from elected and non-elected officials throughout state government and to ask questions.
At Quinnipiac, Smith is majoring in criminal justice with a certificate minor in legal studies. Her interests include public policy, environmental protection, and equality throughout the judicial system.

“Through my Boston State House internship, I thrived in the Speaker Series, while also delving into pressing issues and bill projects,” said Smith. “This experience allowed me to grow professionally and engage meaningfully with legislative matters.”
