North Reading Social to Honor Veterans

The evening of gathering and socializing includes food, prizes and performances by junior ROTC cadets and Marine Corps honor guards.

The Town of North Reading is hosting its 5th Annual Dinner Social that will honor veterans and warriors on Sunday, Sept. 28.

The social will bring in people of all ages, from World War II veterans to junior ROTC cadets. About 145 veterans will be in attendance.

“Unfortunately, there are so many people out there that don’t understand the sacrifices the veterans and our warriors give,” said Susan Magner, director of North Reading Veterans Department. “I feel we need a day to honor them in a nice setting.”

The dining begins at 2 p.m. and ends at 6 p.m. at the Hillview Country Club, 149 North St. Those who attend will receive a full meal in addition to appetizers, salad, dessert, coffee, and tea.

“It’s a nice afternoon of gathering of socializing,” Manger said.

Entertainment will be provided by DJ Jerry O and giveaways and door prizes will be offered.

The Lynn English Marine Corps JROTC Cadets will perform a live version of the Missing Man Table, a ceremony that honors POW and MIA military service members.

The cadets performed last year and were a huge hit, Manger said.

The cadets are under the direction of Sergeant Major Oswald, USMC and Captain Castinetti, USN.

The United State Marine Corps 25th Regiment Honor Guard will also perform a routine.

A Medal of Honor recipient may make an appearance and some state legislators are expected to say a few words, Manger said.

The event is open to the public and tickets are $25. To purchase tickets, call Veteran Services at 978-357-5212.

The event is sponsored by North Reading Veterans Department and The Savings Bank.
