North Reading Stop & Shop Gives Away Reusable Bags Ahead of Ban
North Reading's new town bylaw banning single-use plastic bags goes into effect in 2020.
NORTH READING, MA — Starting in 2020 North Reading's new town bylaw goes into effect, banning single-use plastic bags from stores. To help residents adjust to the change, North Reading's Stop & Shop, located at 265 Main Street, is giving away reusable shopping bags on New Year's Day.
The store will give away 300 reusable bags to local customers on a first-come, first served basis, as the ban on single-use, carryout plastic bags goes into effect. Under the bylaw, bags used in stores must be recyclable or reusable.
Exceptions to the rule include thin-film plastic bags like those used for dry cleaning, newspapers, produce, meat, and bulk foods.
