Police Log: Police Crack Down on Texting Drivers
Excerpts from the North Reading Police Department log.
Monday, July 21
At 9 a.m., a Lowell Road resident reported a scam phone call. The caller said her brother was kidnapped, but later she contacted her brother who was fine.
At 11:18 a.m., an officer was stationed at Main and Francis streets to enforce the no texting while driving law. Police pulled over five drivers and either cited or warned them.

At 12:55 p.m., police responded to Main and North streets about a small fuel spill. Sand was applied to the spill.

At noon, a Yankee Woods Drive resident reported a man walking with an orange backpack in her yard. Police found the person was a trapper employed by animal control who was searching for coyotes.
At 12:40 p.m., police responded to Main Street and Burroughs Road after a three-car accident. One person was taken to Winchester Hospital. One vehicle was towed.
At 4:28 p.m., police received a call from Magnolia Street about a large coyote and two pups in a rear yard. Police notified animal control.
At 9:17 p.m., police received a call from Lowell Road after someone damaged a car window. Two other vehicles were also damaged.
At 9:05 a.m., an Eames Street resident reported a skunk in her driveway. Animal control responded and removed the dead animal.
At 4:52 p.m., police arrested Charles McCullough, 43, 7 Perkins St., Stoneham, and charged him with violating a restraining order.
At 8:18 p.m., a DJ at Great American Tavern reported to police that three microphones were stolen from a back storage area. They are valued at about $550 to $650. Police are investigating.
