It's great news for youth baseball in town. After seeing a surge in interest among middle school-age students, North Reading will field two teams in the Eastern Massachusetts Independent Baseball League in 2014. This is a tryout league, open to all 7th and 8th graders (regardless of the school they attend or if they are home-schooled), and this is in addition to the opportunities presented by North Reading Little League's Senior League (a sign-up league for all 13-16 year-olds in town). EMIBL tryouts will take place on Sunday, Oct. 13, 9 a.m. - 11 a.m. at North Reading High School. Anyone who makes one of the EMIBL teams must also register for Senior League. Scheduling is done to allow players to play in both leagues. Nine towns were involved in the EMIBL in 2013, and the North Reading squad, coached by Marco Vittozzi, won the title with a 15-1 record.
