Youth Services and Flint Memorial Library Announce 16 Graduates of their Safe Kids Story Time

16 graduate from safety class

North Reading Youth Services Director Amy Luckiewicz and Flint Memorial Library Youth Librarian Danielle Masterson are thrilled to announce that 16 students have completed the Spring Session of Safe Kids Story Time. This 5-week course was based on Second Step: Child Protection Unit designed by the Committee for Children. Lessons teach children social skills that are intended to help avoid and discourage dangerous or abusive situations. Thematic lessons include car, fire and gun safety, getting found when you are lost, and learning the difference between safe, unsafe and unwanted touches. During the story time, children interacted with the curriculum, sat for a story or two and completed additional activities based on the day’s lesson. “This was the third time we’ve offered this course. I love it because it’s a safety course for young children and includes touching safety,” commented Youth Services Director Amy Luckiewicz. “I’ve been teaching this program for about 6 years and it’s a great opportunity for us to make touching rules just as second-nature as we do seat belts.” Supports for parents are now available for checkout at the library and address how to have safety conversations at home. The program was offered free to the community thanks to a partnership between the Flint Memorial Library, North Reading Youth Services, and the North Reading Community Impact Team. School Resource Officer Sean O’Leary was in attendance with families as the students demonstrated their safety skills and received their graduation certificates.
