Fifth grade students at New Testament Christian School became newspaper editors recently as a part of their Reading class. Classroom teacher, Mrs. Rebecca Lawrence, states, “Students presented their historical fiction book report in the form of a newspaper. Each student created a newspaper with the publication date reflecting an important event in the story. The newspaper contained five original articles such as a character profile or weather report accompanied by hand drawn pictures.” The students also had to identify which elements of the story were historically accurate and which were fiction.
Sixth grade students became famous artists as part of their research project. Mrs. Lawrence said “viewing and talking about art helps students understand that it is possible to worship God through one's talents. Each sixth grader began the project journey by picking a famous artist and researching that person's life and artistic style. Students wrote a biography on their selected artist and created a personal piece imitating the artist’s style.” Artist selections included Van Gogh and Norman Rockwell. Throughout the month, students looked at other examples of art made available through materials provided by the “Picturing America” grant awarded to the school.
“Project presentations afforded the students opportunity to share what they learned with their peers as well as to engage in public speaking practice. The creative portions showcased the students’ talents,” Mrs. Lawrence said.
