Young Gardeners Grow at the Elisabeth Amen Nursery School at Wheaton College
Many young hands and minds are busily readying the backyard gardens at the Elisabeth Amen Nursery School. All classes, from three-year old to five- year old children, participate in the garden project. This year’s crops include zucchini, squash, melon, pumpkins, tomatoes, peppers, celery, chive, and parsley. Seedlings were started with parent Jen Kotlikoff, our Garden Coordinator. The children delight in the grandeur of each year’s sunflowers and the creeping of the strawberry patch.
In conjunction with exploring plant life, the children toured the campus Greenhouse at the newly constructed Mars Center for Science and Technology. Guided by Jane Young, Greenhouse Caretaker, the children experienced varying climates; rainforest, desert, and temperate zones, culminating in planting with Jane’s guidance back at the nursery school.

While the fruits of their labor grow, the children grow as learners and friends who share the responsibility of living things; increasing their ability to observe, articulate changes, anticipate success, and enjoy nutritious foods. The backyard garden is maintained over the summer by nursery school children and their families who meet, play, and work together to share a tasty and rewarding harvest!
