Norton Kayak Company Teen Adventure Week

Great weather on The Norton Rez was enjoyed by Norton Recreation Departments Teen kayak Camp participants.

Wonderful weather on the Norton Rez was just what we needed for Teen Adventure week. Temperatures in the upper 80s with lots of sunshine made for an awesome week of adventure. The group of kids learned valuable water safety skills and bass fishing techniques. The great weather made for some perfect photo opportunities during our wildlife photography day. Photos of swans, great blue herons and flowering plants were taken by our teen paddlers.

The bass fishing the last few weeks has been slow. The low water levels have pushed the largemouth bass to deeper water. Fishing the dam area has been productive using crayfish jigs on the bottom. Top water baits have also been producing bass before sundown around the islands and submerged stone walls. Local pro Bill Roe has had some productive days fishing the dam and stone walls.

Lets not forget to help keep our Reservoir clean. Local waterfront land owners can help keep the Rez clean by maintaining vehicles to minimize run off into storm drains and the Rez water. Also picking up after your dog will help mimimize bacteria levels in the water. We are all responsible for our waters in town; it's the small things that we can do every day that will make a difference.

The Norton Rez cleanup will be held this year Saturday, Sept. 8 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. There is free kayaking for those who help. We encourage anyone with a boat, canoe or kayak to lend a hand. We can also use people on shore to pick up areas around the dam and Route 140. Wheaton College and Norton Recreation are sponsors of this event. Hope to see our many friends help out again this year.

Be safe and happy paddling, Dave Lennon
