THE DAY THAT A CASINO ALMOST CAME TO NORTON
Find out what's happening in Nortonfor free with the latest updates from Patch.
This afternoon, I was looking over some old Norton Mirror
papers from 1994 and I came across this Norton Mirror article from Friday,
February the 18th, 1994 and it involved a Norton Mirror/Mansfield
News reader survey poll and It was about “Would you like to see the Wampanoag
Indian Tribe’s casino development be built in the Great Woods Property and the
Norton residents were in favor of a casino as 48 residents of Norton said yes
and 7 residents of Norton said no, but on the Mansfield side the poll was much
different as 87 residents said no to a casino and 12 residents said yes to a
casino to be built in Mansfield and the Wampanoag Tribe was considering Norton
a site for an entertainment center and that included a casino, theme park and a
hotel on the Great Woods property that was once owned by Baybank and or the 7
residents of Norton who opposed the site for a casino in Norton, and one
resident wanted the land preserved and another resident proposed either
building a zoo, an ice skating rink or a bowling alley as others were concerned
with the impact gambling that would have on the community and one would have
objected because Indians would not have to pay taxes and the plan for the
Casino in Great Woods was fizzled out and if the Casino were to be built at
Great Woods, it would have a plus for the economic standpoint in Norton, but it
would create traffic problems on 140 and 495 in Mansfield and Norton as you
would have traffic from the Comcast Center for concert traffic, plus the failed
Lego World Theme Park that was once to be in Great Woods in Norton/Mansfield
and add that to the TPC of Boston in Norton with the Deutsche Bank Golf
Championship played on Labor Day Weekend and the traffic problems on 140 and
495 would be chaotic as the Casino Plan for Norton was fizzled out and 19 years
later, the Mashpee Wampanoag tribe is considering a casino site in Taunton.
