What do you know about Habitat?

What Do You Know About Habitat for Humanity?

With all the homes we've built in Norton and surrounding towns, one thing I've noticed is the continuing confusion about exactly what Habitat does and how it does it.  Maybe I can debunk a couple of myths right now . . .

Myth #1:  Habitat gives away free homes to poor people.

Truth #1:  Nope.  We don't give anything away.  Our homeowners have a job and pay a mortgage, taxes, insurance -- just as you and I do.  But a Habitat home is purchased for the cost (without the profit), so it is far more affordable than an ordinary new home would be.  And homeowners need to fulfill a "sweat equity" requirement to take the place of the profit that would usually be a part of purchasing a home.  They actually help build their own home; they are totally involved!

Myth #2:  Families can buy Habitat homes and then sell them later for a huge profit.

Truth #2:  Again, nope.  Families have restrictions written into their deed that keeps these homes in the affordable category.  Yes, a family that sells the home will be given the equity it has earned to that date.  But the house stays in the affordable housing category.

There's a ton of info on the international Habitat site -- www.habitat.org -- and I'd encourage anyone looking for the truth about what this fine organization is and what it does to check it out.

And speaking of checking it out -- have you seen the house yet?  We're getting ready to finish the roof trusses, and then we'll be able to actually roof it!  We're working towards a year-end finish, hoping that mother nature and our volunteers are able to make it happen. You can see pictures on our Facebook/Old Colony Habitat page.

Hope to see you soon at our site!  Come build with us!
