In the early 20th Century, President Theodore Roosevelt signed a diplomatic treaty that effectively opened the way for the construction of the Panama Canal. The project took over a decade to complete and Prior to 1914, ships travelling from the Atlantic to the Pacific had to take the lengthy Cape Horn route around South America.
