Gov. Deval Patrick's grandiose plans for new spending on transportation appear to be dead in the water, at least if Beacon Hill legislators have their way.
The Boston Globe reported Thursday that amidst a stalemate between Patrick and the legislative leadership of Senate President Therese Murray and House Speaker Robert DeLeo, the governor's proposed $1.9 billion tax increase likely won't become reality.
In its place will be a $500 million increase legislators have agreed to pass. The Globe reported this increase would include a three-cent-a-gallon gas tax increase and a $1-per-pack cigarette tax increase.
The Globe article hints at a communication breakdown between Patrick and members of his own party on Beacon Hill. He reportedly has not directly negotiated with either DeLeo or Murray since June 17 and some legislators quoted expressed frustration with the process.
The Legislature passed a $34 billion budget for fiscal year 2014 last week, which is still awaiting approval from the governor.
