Lancers Volleyball Comes Up Short Against Millis

The Mohawks down the Lancers in a 3-0 sweep at Norton High School.

Despite moving the ball well and excellent play from the front row, the Lancers could not overcome the Millis Mohawks Wednesday night. Finding momentum out of the Lancers’ struggles to serve, the Mohawks walked out of with a 3-0 win over the Lancers.

Things looked good early in the opening set for the Lancers. Tied at 16-16, Norton already saw 2 big aces from Caisey Calabro to keep the Lancers in the game.

Quickly gaining momentum, the Mohawks went on a 9-1 rally to end the set and win it 25-17.

The second set was marked with poor serves from Norton that Millis was able to capitalize on. With no ability to grasp consecutive points, the Lancers were stuck trying to defend against a Millis team gaining confidence with each point.

“The difference in the whole game was our serving. That was the one thing that really killed us,” said Norton Coach Diane Marzelli. “It's a momentum changer when you miss two or three serves in a row. It can change the whole tempo of the game.”

The issues with the serving were evident in the score as Millis took the second set 25-10 to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

Down 11-4 in the third set, the Lancers rallied back to get to within two and make it an 11-13 game. Once again, serving and not being able to find a way to get a kill hurt the Lancers’ chances of making a come back

“They hit well, they played well and they played together and the whole team was positive through every single point and the one thing that really brought us down was our mid-serve,” said Marzelli.

The Mohawks quickly regained their composure and won the final game 25-15 on a 12-4 rally to sweep the Lancers.

Even with the loss there were still positives to be seen.

“I saw some really great hitting at the front row. Amanda Sullivan did a great job in the front row. Jackie Dunne played really really great in the back row. Caisey Calabro played really really smart and my setters were moving the ball around really well,” said Marzelli.

Casiey Calabro ended the game with 3 kills and 2 aces. Amanda Sullivan had 4 kills and an ace. Abby Anderson had 5 assists.

With the loss the Lancers are now 3-7.

The Lancers will travel to Holliston Oct. 21 for a 6:30 p.m. matchup before coming home for the finale against Foxborough Oct. 24 at 4:45 p.m.
