"Given the enormous popularity of the sport across the country and here in Massachusetts asΒ well, it is worthwhile to have a solid understanding of what the costs and benefits might be toΒ the Commonwealth," Timilty said in a statement.Β "The New Hampshire Motor Speedway has incredible success in hostingΒ NASCAR races and I think it is important to take a look at the possibility of attracting thoseΒ tourist dollars and other associated revenues to Massachusetts."
Timilty, a Walpole resident, introduced an amendment to the Senate'sΒ economic development billΒ that directs theΒ Massachusetts Sports Partnership to compile a report about the possibility of Massachusetts hosting a NASCAR race.
The report would be due onΒ July 1, 2015. It would exploreΒ potential host venues, costsΒ and revenues, and how local laws or ordinances would affect such an event.
