MassDOT Selects #DOTspeak Safety Message Winners

After receiving hundreds of entries, MassDOT has selected three winners of the #DOTspeak highway message board contest.

MassDOT launched the contest in June to solicit ideas from the public for inventive ways to remind drivers about proper driving behavior. Over 500 entries were received from Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and email.

“We received some very creative, thoughtful and funny message suggestions,” said MassDOT Secretary & CEO Richard A. Davey for a company press release. “I encourage people to continue to engage with us – you’re our eyes and ears on the road, and we rely on you to help keep the roads safe.”

Davey and Highway Administrator Frank DePaola announced the winners on Thursday. The winning messages will be displayed on hundreds of message boards across the Commonwealth during some of the busiest travel periods of the year:

The Road Rage Winner is Patrick Casey, of Allston, with his submission of “Keep Calm and Drive On,” which will be displayed August 15-18 (a top 10 travel weekend based on 2013 toll data).

The Distracted Driving Winner is Justin Lovell, of Whitman, with his submission of “Put down the phone! Your LOLs and OMGs can wait,” which will be displayed on Labor Day weekend.

The Seatbelt Use Winner is The Parent’s Supervised Driving Program team of Safe Roads Alliance with their submission of “Make yah Ma proud, wear yah seatbelt.” That message will be displayed on Columbus Day weekend.
