Mathapalooza a Perfect Addition to NMS
Incentive program well-received by parents, students and staff.
Every part of the equation was spot on Thursday, as students at celebrated Mathapalooza.
“I couldn’t ask for a better day, weather wise,” said seventh grade math teacher Eric Beard, who came up with the idea of this incentive program. He also noted that it was all made possible by principal Michael O’Rourke, who didn’t shoot Beard’s ideas down. In fact, O’Rourke found himself dancing around in a crab costume by the end of the day as part of the teacher talent show.
Throughout the day kids also enjoyed dunking their teachers in tanks, a rock band, improve show, magician, inflatable slide, bounce house, food and more.

In order to be invited to Mathapalooza, students had to pass through a three-pronged system. They maintained a 75 percent average on quizzes and tests, scored a 75 percent or above on the MCAS practice test and completed 75 percent of their math homework. About 95 percent of the students met these qualifications and were able to participate in the days events. Beard hopes that this program will be implemented in years to come.
“I think the best part of it was that they had to do homework and didn’t just need to get the grades,” said parent Stephanie Murphy. “Mr. Beard did a wonderful job.”

Even students agreed that this special day was worth the work all year long.
“It got you to do what you needed to do,” said student Nicole Littlefield. “Good actions have good awards.”
