Medas Family Donation Scores One for the SERSD Lacrosse Team

Barbara Medas donates scoreboard to lacrosse team.

Although tragedy struck one Norton family 20 years ago, their contributions to Southeastern Regional Vocational Technical High School has ensured that some good come out of it.

In memory of William “Bill” Medas, graduate of Southeastern Regional Class of ’72 who died in a motorcycle accident, Barbara Medas donated a high-tech, portable scoreboard to the lacrosse program.

Barbara’s grandson and William’s nephew, Brent Medas, plays for the boy’s varsity lacrosse team at the school. Barbara attends his games, but something bothered her.

“My mother was at the game one day and she couldn’t see the score,” explained Bob Medas, William’s brother. Prior to the donation, people used flip cards with numbers on them.

So Barbara purchased the all-in-one scoreboard, timer, buzzer and remote for approximately $1,500.

“My hope is that people will see it and ask what they can do to help,” she told David Bloodsworth, public relations liaison at Southeastern Regional School District.

Brent Medas, a junior at Southeastern Regional, is enrolled in the school’s machine tech program. He made the memorial plaque that was affixed to the scoreboard, reading “In Memory of Bill Medas, Class of ’72.”

The goodwill of the Medas family didn’t even begin with the scoreboard. When the accident happened, Barbara funded a “toolship,” that went towards the purchase of trade tools students would need after graduation. Unfortunately, that money has since run out. But now that the scoreboard has been donated, it will serve as a reminder of the family’s generosity.

The presentation of the new scoreboard was made by Matt Lefsky, the lacrosse head coach, at last Friday’s home game against Sacred Heart, in which Southeastern came back from a 4-0 half-time deficit to beat Sacred Heart 7-6.
