New Science Lab to be Dedicated to Peter Leddy

Lab to be part of new addition at Norton High.

Monday night’s Norton School Committee meeting started out very emotional as Tanya Benoit, a science teacher at , made a proposal to name one of the new science labs after her late colleague Peter Leddy.

Leddy died after his battle against cancer Dec. 4. He was a member of the science department of Norton High School for over 30 years. In his time at NHS, Leddy was also a volleyball and softball coach, science department chair and photographer.

After his passing, Norton High students and faculty past and present expressed just and how .

“On a personal note, Peter meant a lot to me,” said Benoit as her eyes began to water. “He was a mentor to me. He knew this was the road I was going down, and he taught me as much as he could.”

“This man was great by doing the everyday things. That was what was important.”

The committee now expects Benoit to pick up where he left off.

“Tanya, you know, Mr. Leddy thought enough of you to let you know he saw something special,” said Superintendent Dr. Patricia Ansay, as she tried to fight back tears. “So you need to do the same for somebody else. Let them know you see something special in them.”

The committee unanimously approved the dedication of the science lab in Leddy’s honor. The new labs will come with the addition on Norton High School. The construction will begin a few weeks into March and to be completed by Dec. 30, 2013.
