NHS Student Receives Superintendent of School’s Award

Letter from guidance counselor recognizes Elizabeth A. LaVerghetta for accomplishments.

Elizabeth A. LaVerghetta is an intelligent, gifted, talented, and dynamic young woman who makes significant contributions to the quality of academic, extra-curricular, athletic, and social life at Norton High School. Elizabeth’s academic transcript highlights her involvement in the most challenging courses offered at Norton High School. Pursuing courses offered primarily at the Advanced Placement and Honors levels, Elizabeth ranks one in a class of 179 students, and has attained a junior year cumulative, weighted grade point average of 5.5545 on a 5.0 scale (4.44 on a 4.0 scale).

Academic accolades include membership in the National Honor Society, Art Honor Society, English Honor Society, Mathematics Honor Society, Science Honor Society, and the Spanish Honor Society. Membership in the six societies is a testament to her academic excellence, worthy character, demonstrated leadership, and commendable service to both her school and community.

Scoring in the advanced category on the MCAS English Language Arts and Mathematics test, Elizabeth’s scores designated her as a John and Abigail Scholar. She also scored in the Advanced range on the MCAS Biology test. The Norton High School faculty unanimously selected Elizabeth as the school’s recipient of the Yale Book Award presented annually to a student who has shown intellectual promise and significant involvement in extracurricular activities and community service.

Profiled by her teachers as a superior student, Elizabeth approaches her studies with a clear sense of purpose and focus. Elisabeth’s English, science and math teachers concur that she is a serious-minded student who approaches her studies in an inquisitive and analytical manner. A superior student, she displays a capacity for clear, logical thinking, and demonstrates her ability for seeing beyond the obvious. Elizabeth’s contributions to class discussions, as well as her home assignments, projects and presentations, reflect not only her knowledge of subject mater but also her depth of understanding.

A conscientious student, Elizabeth is knowledgable of the rubrics established of each class and perseveres to achieve the exemplary rating for all that she undertakes. Whether involved in an individual or group effort, she remains committed to the task at hand and encourages others to work cooperatively to achieve the stated objective.

Sports-wise, Elizabeth is a member of the school’s track and golf teams. The golf course serves as the arena where she best demonstrates her commendable sports-woman-like conduct, athleticism, skill, and sense of fair play. A valued member of the golf team, Elizabeth is the sole “Lady Lancer” on the school’s golf team. An accomplished golfer, Elizabeth’s interest in golf extends beyond her participation on the golf team. For several years she has played with the Massachusetts First Tee Chapter where she has garnered numerous awards and recognitions. A model athlete, Elizabeth volunteers weekly teaching and assisting other young aspiring girls in perfecting their game.

What perhaps best distinguishes Elizabeth from other students is that she is equally passionate about her extra-curricular involvement as she is about her academic pursuits. She unselfishly devotes countless hours working to improve the quality of student life at Norton High School. A member of six honors societies, Elizabeth is actively involved in developing and implementing many of the societies’ outreach programs and activities that assist other students and the community. A member of the Leadership Council, she effectively communicates her vision and inspires others to achieve the desired results. Elizabeth’s integrity has earned her the respect of administrators, teachers, staff, and peers.

A community-minded individual, Elizabeth devotes countless hours to volunteer efforts. Last year Elizabeth planned and implemented the Cupboard of Kindness Benefit Golf Tournament and raised over $3,000 cash and collected over $1,000 worth on non-perishable food items to assist the Cupboard in carrying out its mission of providing food for the less fortunate. Plans are already in motion for this year’s Cupboard of Kindness Benefit.

Artistically talented and gifted, Elizabeth serves as president of the Norton High School’s Art Honor Society. Her paintings and drawings highlight her awareness of space, color, and texture seldom seen in artwork created by one her age. Elizabeth has developed a flexibility that allows her to work equally well in various media. Whether involved in painting or drawing, a uniqueness of style emerges that highlights her sensitivity to detail. This sensitivity, coupled with creative genius, has brought refinement and maturity to her artistic expression.

A young woman of great personal integrity and outstanding academic promise, Elizabeth A. LaVerghetta is a most worthy recipient of the Norton School District Superintendent of School’s Award.

Sincerely,
