Norton Boys And Girls Basketball Both 2-0

Lancer teams earn second straight wins on Tuesday night.

The boys' and girls' basketball teams are both off to terrific starts, having registered their second straight victories with Tri-Valley League wins over Dover-Sherborn on Tuesday night.

The Lancers improved to 2-0, holding their second straight opponent under 50 points on the way to a 56-47 victory at Dover-Sherborn High.

Bishop Feehan transfer Steve Burrill, a junior guard, led Norton with 16 points, including 10 in the first half. Junior forward Colin Feeney contributed 11 points, while senior captain and forward Phil Rizzo grabbed a team-high 13 rebounds.

The Lancers held just a four-point advantage at the half, 28-24, but a pair of three-pointers by Burrill in the third quarter helped the visitors push their advantage to nine points entering the fourth quarter.

Norton will now welcome Hopkinton into the Lawrence Larocque Gymnasium for a key Tri-Valley League contest on Friday night at 6:30 p.m. The Hillers opened both their season and their TVL slate with a hard-fought 64-57 win in Medfield on Tuesday.

Hopkinton held a 10-point advantage over the Warriors early in the fourth quarter, 49-39. But a 17-7 run by Medfield cut the lead to 56-55 with one minute left. However, an 8-2 surge to close the game gave Hopkinton its first win of the year.

The Norton girls improved to 2-0 with a dominant 51-24 victory over Dover-Sherborn in a TVL contest on Tuesday night at the Larocque Gymnasium.

The Lancers jumped on the Raiders right from the opening tip, building a 19-point lead at halftime, 25-6. Dover-Sherborn did not have a field goal in the first half, scoring all six of its points from the free throw line. Junior guard Meg Brown led the way for Norton in the first half, scoring seven of her nine points in the game during that span.

Holding a 19-point lead at the half, Norton outscored Dover-Sherborn 26-18 in the second half for the final margin of victory.

Senior forward Alex Grimes put forth her second straight excellent performance for the Lancers. After scoring 12 points in a season-opening win over Seekonk, she led the team on Tuesday night with 13 points.

Sophomore guard Rebecca Wasylow scored eight points and was a terror on defense with a total of nine steals. Sophomore forward Allison Alioto had one of her best games in a Lancer uniform, totaling nine rebounds, including six on the offensive end.

After a pair of home wins, Norton will face its first road challenge when the team travels to Hopkinton for a TVL game on Friday night at 7 p.m. The Hillers are coming off a tough offensive performance during a 35-24 home loss to Medfield on Tuesday night. Hopkinton scored just 12 points in each half, trailing 19-12 at the break. The Warriors then outscored the Hillers 16-12 in the second half for the final margin of victory.
