Norton Girls Track Wants To Extend Late-Season Surge

Lancers will send six members of team to Division 4 State Meet on Sunday.

After getting off to a slow start to its Tri-Valley League campaign, the girls’ indoor track team responded with a strong finish.

And the Lancers will look to continue that recent success during the Division 4 State Meet on Sunday at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston.

Norton began the 2010-11 campaign with five consecutive losses, but bounced back to go 2-0-1 over its final three dual meets of the winter to finish with a 2-5-1 record. The Lancers first battled Medway to a 43-43 deadlock and then beat both Bellingham (65-20) and Millis (57.5-28.5) to complete the year with two straight wins.

Norton then had several excellent performances, including a school-record effort, during the TVL Championship Meet on February 6 at the Reggie Lewis Center.

Emma Ethier established a new school record in the 55-meter hurdles, finishing in fifth place in the event with a record-breaking time of 9.52 seconds.

Courtney Williams placed second in the 55-meter dash with a time of 7.5 seconds, while Rebekah Sargent finished third in the high jump with a height of 4-10. Sargent also placed eighth in the 300 meters with a time of 45.99 seconds.

Ethier, Sargent, Jill Wry and Meghan Elliot also combined to finish in third place in the 4x400 relay event with a time of 4:30.56.

Ethier and Williams were selected to the TVL All-Star Team.

Sargent was the Lancers’ MVP during the regular season, leading the team in scoring with a total of 56.25 points. Ethier is second on the team in points with 56 points, while Williams is third with 52.33.

Norton will have six representatives at the Division 4 State Meet on Sunday in Boston.

Williams has qualified for the divisional meet in the 55-meter dash and the 4x200 relay event. Sargent has earned spots in the high jump, 300 and 4x200 relay.

Wry and Elliott have both qualified in the 4x200 relay. Ethier is a qualifier in the 55-meter hurdles, while Stacie Linfield has earned a spot in the 1,000 meters.

The top three finishers overall in each event during the division meet next Sunday will advance to the MIAA All-State Meet, which will be held Friday, Feb. 25 at the Reggie Lewis Center.
