Norton Offers Two Ways to Ice Skate in Town

Rink on Wheaton campus for college community while Slattery property open to the public.

The men and women’s ice hockey teams at have joined together to provide the campus community with an opportunity to enjoy the winter weather by installing an outdoor skating rink.

The rink is only open for the college community and guests from dawn to dusk with several events such as open skate night, intramural hockey, open recreation hockey and group skates. Ice skate rentals will not be provided unless it is a special event. Helmets are required for all skaters younger than 18.

While ice skating on the rink is not open to the public, the Slattery property located at 166 John Scott Blvd. is. The weather must cooperate first, as the shallow pond must freeze over.

"If there is ice and gate to the property is open than that usually means skating is on," said Sheri Cohen, chairwoman of Norton Parks and Recreation.

In fact, Parks and Rec hope to have a skating party Saturday, Jan. 28, 2 to 4 p.m. If the pond isn't frozen by then, there is an alternate date of Feb. 11, same time.

"This is a free event and we will have hot cocoa, cookies, hopefully music and a fire pit. Just bring your own skates," Cohen said.
