Jerusha Bjork's second grade class goes green in celebration of Earth Day.

Jerusha Bjork’s second grade class at went paperless for two days as a way of going green in celebration of Earth Day.

Bjork did this last year for the first time, and said it went over very well.

“The kids loved the challenge,” Bjork said. “It is amazing how much paper we can actually use in a day.”

To pull this off, they used their regular daily tools, just a lot more than usual. They used the white board, Interactive Smart Board, flash cards, the computer lab and math manipulatives such as coins, pattern blocks, small clocks, etc. The students didn’t use paper for homework assignments either. Bjork assigned homework involving reading and adding and subtracting coins they find around the house, practicing telling time on an analog clock etc.

“My students and I try to be earth conscious all throughout the year by recycling a lot of paper and also reusing the back of papers too,” Bjork said.

Bjork’s goal is to go paperless for a week next year.

“We are also currently recycling bottles and cans in an effort to raise money to adopt a manatee through the Save The Manatee Club.”

So far, the class has raised $45, and need $55 more.
