In anticipation of Earth Week, the Green Team was very busy.
During Earth Week, Mr. G. Goes Green was at JCS to teach students even more about “going green.” Some third graders volunteered to help collect, count and package recycled drink pouches. Each week, third grade students from Miss Alves’ class, along with Green team leaders Mrs. Lerner and Mrs. Sunderland, package up over 500 drink pouches. These pouches will be sent off to TerraCycle to be made into something new. Many JCS students have been sending in their “Green Tips” about what they do at home to recycle or help the environment in some way. These students received prizes that were made from the recycled drink pouches.
“I put all the food scraps that can be composted in a composting bin,” said second grader Katie Simpson, who is in Mrs. O’Neill’s class. To piggy back on that idea, Thomas Anderson of Mrs. Taylor’s second grade class suggests starting a compost pile in your backyard, which would include kitchen scraps and yard clippings. Decomposable papers like coffee filters and egg cartons can also be used.

“The pile breaks down the waste and turns it into rich soil for your garden,” Thomas said.
Lyvia Sunderland, from Mrs. O’Neill’s class, said she shuts the water off when she brushes her teeth.

“When you get a drink, choose a reusable cup so that we don’t make a big, big, big pile of paper cups. Too much trash pollutes the Earth,” said second grader Hope LeClaire who is in Mrs. Almeida’s class.
Currently, students are raising money for Mission to Liberia, which is partnering with Bridgewater State University to raise funds to bring safe drinking water to Liberia. Students also wore green every Wednesday in April to support this effort. On these days, students brought in a dollar to give to this cause.
