Wheaton Softball Sweeps MIT On The Road

Berardi launches grand slam, pitches shutout in game two.

The Wheaton College softball team swept a pair of New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) games against MIT by scores of 6-5, and 8-0 on Saturday afternoon at Briggs Field.

Wheaton 6, MIT 5

FreshmanΒ Emma HartΒ (Lincoln, R.I./Lincoln)Β and juniorΒ Ashley BrillonΒ (Attleboro, Mass./Bishop Feehan)Β knocked in a combined five runs to pace the Lyons offense.

JuniorΒ Allison BakerΒ (Orange, Conn./Amity Regional)Β earned the win (8-5) on four innings pitched, nine hits and four runs (three earned). SophomoreΒ Noelle ChristmasΒ (Plymouth, Mass./Plymouth South)Β recorded her first save of the season allowing one unearned run over three innings, one hit and one strikeout.

MIT sophomoreΒ Ellie Fodor (Trenton, Mich./Trenton)Β suffered the loss on three-and-two-thirds innings, seven hits, six runs (all unearned), one walk and a game-high six strikeouts.

Wheaton opened up the scoring in the second as Hart doubled home a pair of runs. Brillon followed with an RBI single to make the score 3-0. The Lyons tacked on three more in the fourth on two hits, one error and one runner left on base. Hart plated a run with a fielder's choice RBI, Brillon smacked a run-producing double and freshmanΒ Marissa TimoteoΒ (Jupiter, Fla./Jupiter)Β capped the scoring with an RBI single.

The Engineers answered in the bottom half of the frame with three runs to cut their deficit in half at 6-3. SeniorΒ Leah Alpert (Needham, Mass./Needham)Β drove in a run with a double while sophomoreΒ K.K. Wopat (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville)Β highlighted the inning with a two-run single.

MIT scored solo runs in the fifth and seventh to make it a 6-5 contest. Christmas stymied any further damage in the last half inning as she struck out Fodor with the go-ahead run at first base.

Wheaton 8, MIT 0

SophomoreΒ Emily BerardiΒ (Boston, Mass./Boston Latin)Β was the difference in game two as she shut out the Engineers over six innings only yielding two hits, one walk and three strikeouts to go along with a grand slam in the top of the fourth that put the game away.

Freshman Alexandra Marshall (Glen Head, N.Y./North Shore) took the loss over four innings of work, four hits, six runs (three earned), one walk and four punchouts.

In the first inning, Brillon lifted a sac fly to center field for a 1-0 advantage. FreshmanΒ Erin DeneenΒ (Framingham, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury)Β notched a sacrifice fly of her own in the second to push the Lyons ahead 2-0 before Berardi launched Wheaton's first grand slam of the season in the fourth.

Brillon went 3-for-7 (.429) at the plate with one run scored, one double and three RBI's. Hart was 3-for-8 (.375) with three runs scored, one double, one triple and three RBI's.

Wheaton (16-10, 6-2 NEWMAC) hosts Brandeis University Tuesday, April 9 for a non-conference doubleheader at 3:30 p.m. MIT (11-8, 2-4 NEWMAC) travels to UMass Boston on Tuesday for a non-conference twinbill at 3 p.m.
